The importance of accessibility for kiosks

Why Accessibility?

  • 8.1 million who have difficulty seeing, including 2 million who are blind
  • 7.6 million with impaired hearing
  • 19.9 million who have challenges lifting and grasping—or pressing buttons on a touchscreen interface

Kiosk Industry: Self checkout is considered a “kiosk” in the industry. While accessibility guidelines and regulations are in place for websites and ATMs, there are only a few regulations in place for kiosks, most which only relate to hardware and not the software.

ADA Regulation: The American Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including public accommodations.

Current Issues: Even with the current ADA regulations in place, people who face accessibility issues are still constantly underserved by different bossiness such as grocery stores and gas stations today.

The future of self-checkout: Sets a precedent for businesses to be inclusive of all customers.
People with impairments will be able to expect technology that suitstheir needs.
